Contemporary Country Garden, Suffolk

The Brief: These clients near Framlingham in Suffolk wanted to transform the overgrown garden into a plant lovers paradise with a more contemporary vibe that would provide spaces for entertaining and better link the Suffolk barn with the surrounding countryside.

The Solution: Making the most of the south-facing aspect, the design includes abundant planting close to the house enhancing the outside-inside connection and creates conducive seating areas surrounded by plants. The main terrace of limestone setts includes gravel garden pockets and leads onto a large lawn. Gravel paths link the various spaces around the garden, weaving through the planting to create an immersive experience. Black timber fences echoing the Suffolk barn create privacy and a garden studio with cedar shingle roof, clad in the same black weather boarding, balances the space and provides the perfect home office. Curvy corten steel raised beds work well with the other materials and help improve drainage. The contemporary planting scheme includes many sun loving perennials and grasses, and there are also wildflower meadows and more shady woodland areas within the garden. The diversity of the planting ensures changing interest – and plenty of food for pollinators and habitats for wildlife through the seasons.
