Barnsbury Garden, London N1

The Brief: This north facing garden was dark and uninviting with overgrown climbers on the old boundary fences. The levels in the garden had been changed following a recent contemporary extension but timber poles used for retaining walls did not match its clean lines. The client wanted the garden to be an attractive and useable space that would work well with the house.

The Solution: The boundary walls were replaced with bespoke cedar trellis to retain privacy but allow more light into the garden. A bespoke cedar garden store was also made to blend in. More light is created by rendering and painting the good garden wall white, and subtle garden lighting is used to uplight planters on the patio. The pale stone tiles for the patio are also used to clad the timber retaining walls in the garden to help achieve a clean crisp finish. A large white planter provides a focal point in the sunniest end of the garden and a warm ipe deck, planted on either side leads to the perfect place to sit in the sun.
