The Brief: This beautiful Georgian house in Hampstead was being sensitively renovated by Roger Mears Architects and the clients wanted a design for the walled garden that would complement the property and attract wildlife.

The Solution: A long path, punctuated with pairs of box balls, leads to different places to sit and enjoy different views of the garden and the house. Beyond the lawn, the path leads to a paved area with a sunken reflective pond and a water feature made from an old stone trough. Here a pair of etched galvanised metal benches provide a tranquil place to sit. Reclaimed yorkstone and garden ornaments are used to help lend a period feel and bespoke lattice trellis and an attractive arbour help create more privacy. At the back of the garden, the path leads through an ornate metal arch to a shed tucked behind the leaning walnut tree and a woodland planting scheme. Elsewhere the planting scheme feels quite soft and cottagey with lots of long flowering perennials for bees and butterflies to feast on.
